Invitation

ECU College of Fine Arts and Communication and School of Art and Design would like to cordially invite you and your family to an art exhibition,  “Old Korea from the Eyes of Four Western Artists.”

You will see artworks created by four artists, Elizabeth Keith (1881- 1956), Lilian Miller (1895- 1943), Paul Jacoulet (1896- 1960 and Willy Seiler (1903- 1988).

Through the exhibition, we want to celebrate the cultural confluence of the East and the West made possible by these artists. Witnessing this will arouse your curiosity, inspire you or even challenge your worldviews.

Historical Context of Korea in the Late 19th and Early 20th Century

How do you see people whose physical features, cultural traditions, and customs differ from yours? Do you see people who look different from you as being just as human as you?

Artworks Featuring Old Korea by Four Western Artists:
Why Now and Here?

"I see a lot of potential in Elizabeth Keith’s work, because you can teach about her methods of observation, while also teaching about the harmful stereotypes that shouldn’t be depicted. I learned that good art is produced by observing people, rather than guessing about a culture that you do not know very much about (personal communication, March 1, 2022)."

Dr. Youngdahl Song

"I have been one of Elizabeth Keith's devoted fans ever since I read her books. Though uninitiated in the art world in general and woodblock prints in particular, I found myself reading everything about Keith and collecting her woodblock prints with fervor."
